NEMSA calls for more strategic collaboration with Radio Nigeria to enhance public awareness on electrical safety and standards

The management of the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) is taking enhancing public awareness on electrical safety and enforcement of technical standard and regulations compliance, to a new level as it paid a courtesy visit to the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) in Abuja. 

The delegation, led by NEMSA’s Managing Director and Chief Electrical Inspector of the Federation, Aliyu Tukur Tahir, sought to strengthen the agency’s existing partnership with Radio Nigeria while advocating for broader public sensitization on the safe use of electricity.

Tahir commended the long-standing support NEMSA has received through Radio Nigeria’s platforms, especially the agency’s flagship awareness program, Service and Safety Half Hour, which has been running successfully for eight years. He expressed appreciation for the visibility this collaboration has brought NEMSA’s mandate, including enforcement of technical standards, certification of meters and installations, as well as protection of lives and property in Nigeria’s electricity sector.

While outlining the agency’s achievements, such as the modernization of inherited assets, establishment of new field offices and meter testing laboratories, and attainment of ISO certifications, Aliyu Tukur Tahir appealed for the “Service and Safety Half Hour” program duration to be extended from 30 minutes to one hour, adding that the feedback from listeners revealed the need for more time to allow for deeper engagement and public participation.

In his response, the Director-General of FRCN, Dr. Mohammed Bulama, acknowledged the critical role NEMSA plays in ensuring the safety and integrity of Nigeria’s power systems, and expressed Radio Nigeria’s willingness to strengthen its collaboration with NEMSA. He noted that as a media organization reliant on stable electricity, Radio Nigeria is directly impacted by the quality of electrical installations and infrastructure. He pledged stronger support for NEMSA’s mission, and  proposed a joint committee to explore expanded collaborations — including training, local language programming, and outreach across FRCN’s 45 FM stations nationwide.
