The management of Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission,NERC, is on a road show seeking stakeholders contributions to firm up the framework for the much awaited Net Billing Regulations it is about to introduce into the Nigerian Electricity Market.
Speaking at the Lagos arm of the public consultations, Friday, 17th October, Dr. Yusuf Ali, NERC Commissioner for Research and Data Analytics, emphasized the importance of stakeholder voices in shaping a fair and inclusive energy future.
He noted that with Nigeria’s growing captive generation capacity and grid constraints, the right structure can empower prosumers to contribute excess energy, enhance reliability and support the energy transition.
Dr. Ali also reaffirmed NERC’s collaborative role with state regulators—encouraging them to take the final output of this consultation and adapt it to address the peculiarities of their respective states.
He urged all participants, both in-person and online, to lend their voices to the development of this important technical regulation as Nigeria takes its first step toward implementing the Net Billing Regulation framework.
Power experts believe that this Net Billing Regulations would incentivize increased adoption of renewable energy in Nigeria as companies and homes that generate excess power can “export” such excess into the grid and be rewarded either with energy credits or cash.
